Abstract In this lab we tested 8 substances for conductivity, solubility and to determine if the substance was ionic or covalent. The 8 substances were NaCl, phenyl salicylate, dextrose, sucrose, KI, NaI, and mystery substances 2 & 4. The way we tested it to see if they were ionic or covalent, we put a small amount of each substance in aluminum boats and timed their melting points. Some melted instantly, some took a few seconds and some even stayed in its original state. My group determined that if the substance melted quickly or just melted in general then it was covalent. Electrolytes are certain nutrients or chemicals that are present in your body that have many functions, electrolytes can be found in the human body within calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, phosphate, and chloride. Electrolytes have important jobs in the human body system, like regulating your heartbeat to allowing your muscles to contract. Technology How do health practitioners test for electrolytes? - use your understanding of the science involved! under what circumstances do they perform this test? Are there any limitations to this test? -Is there a notable circumstance in which the results would be inaccurate? Describe the limitations in detail.
